Covered vs. Uncovered RV & Boat Storage in Rexburg

When you store an RV, boat or trailer in Eastern Idaho, the first choice is simple: an open parking space, a covered unit or a fully enclosed unit. The second choice gets overlooked: when you can actually get to your rig. Here is how to think through both, based on what we see at Elite Storage in Rexburg.

What an uncovered space really costs your rig

Open parking is the cheapest way to store, and for a short stay it can be fine. The tradeoff is exposure. Idaho sun fades decals, gel coat and upholstery, and dries out roof seals and tires. Winter adds snow load on roofs and slide-outs, and one hailstorm can do in an afternoon what years of sun would do slowly. If you store uncovered, a good fitted cover and a solid winterizing routine matter a lot more.

What a covered unit buys you

A roof over the rig blocks the sun, sheds the snow and takes the hail. Your RV or boat comes out of storage cleaner, the seals and tires last longer, and there is far less to worry about between trips. Our covered units are 12x40, sized for most travel trailers, fifth wheels and boats.

Fully enclosed, drive-through units

For the most protection, an enclosed unit puts walls and a door between your rig and the weather. Our drive-through units run up to 14x60, which fits large Class A and Super C motorhomes, and you pull in one end and out the other instead of backing a long rig into a tight space. A 14x30 fits Class C motorhomes and shorter Class A models. Power is available in select units if you want to keep a battery on a trickle charger.

Check who can get through the gate, and when

Storage you cannot get to is frustrating, and storage just anyone can get into is worse. Some facilities leave their gate unlocked during set hours, which means anyone can drive in during those hours and you cannot get in at all outside them. Our gate stays closed and secure 24 hours a day, and tenants open it with their own unique gate code at any hour, day or night. The facility is well lit around the clock, so a late pickup after a long drive home is easy. When you compare facilities, ask two questions: when can I get in, and who else can?

Which should you choose?

If your rig is newer, has a gel coat finish, decals, or a roof full of seals and skylights, covered or enclosed storage pays for itself in avoided repairs and better resale value. Whatever you choose, store it clean, dry and winterized. Our FAQ covers sizing, and our Amenities page lists the free dump station and compressed air station for tenants in season.
